It's not always accidental - your KPI's might drive you to hurt the prosperity of your users to goose your own success. Suddenly the well intentioned purchasing decision of a maintenance manager results in a PR black eye that lingers for years. Restaurants and theaters spending thousands of dollars reaching new audiences get labeled as racist because their touchless soap dispensers recognize the paler skin of their engineers and designers more than the dark skin of some audience members. Whether that be literal wealth, peace of mind, a sense of belonging, a sense of power, social standing, understanding, or purpose, we have to gain something.īecause they happen in social settings, phygital experiences are especially prone to unintended bias that can escalate and that undermines their creators' missions. The #1 hallmark of a viable phygital experience is that engaging in it continuously makes both creators and users feel like they’ve gained something. They rebel against cruel tyrants that torture their subjects for demanding the marginalized have the same rights as the in crowd. They steal from stores that tempt them with beautiful products they feel unable to purchase legally. People rebel against things that wield power over them.
